Why Art is Important in Medicine
BY BRIAN GOLDMAN, ER DOCTOR AT MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL TORONTO
"There was a time when a well-rounded physician had a good grounding in the humanities as well, and we lost that as more teaching time focused on understanding medical science and technology. The whole process of art appreciation is getting to notice things that you otherwise wouldn’t. When I walk into the room, before the patient and I have exchanged a word, I see the neck muscles are contracting every time they take a breath, and very subtly, that the nostrils are flaring. It’s telling me the patient is in respiratory distress, and I might have to make a splitsecond decision. You need the powers of observation to detect that"

PRAKSIS GREECE
Although a challenging experience, my work with PRAKSIS GREECE proved to be quite instrumental for my own professional development. Above anything else, I learned the importance of compassion and humanity in my work and my life.
WCBN RADIO
I’ve worked with WCBN since the start of my professional photography carrer. To me, sports photography is more than just a profession, it’s a lifelong passion. I aim to capture the emotions behind the game, and this client appreciates that about my work.
Spearheading my first traveling solo exhibition, Proud Mary has inspired me to create numerous works honoring the brave and eclectic men and woman battling breast cancer. Pushing my skills to include not only painting and photography but performance and sculptural art, creating a solo show has driven me to explore mediums I have never dared to work in.

VOLUNTEER IN SYRIAN REFUGEE CAMP
PRAKSIS - ATHENS, GREECE
It is very grounding realizing that those who have nothing are more willing to share the little they have than those who have everything. I have had the honor of being a warm hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friend, and a playmate to so many refugee children, not one of which spoke my language. I was moved to tears many times volunteering here, once from a one-legged man who found me on the metro to thank me for giving him clothes and laughing and joking like he was just another friend, once from watching an 8 year old "man" give the only food he would get today to a smaller child who needed it more in his eyes, and lastly because as I left I wished I could stay forever around these beautiful souls.
